June Refresh Recap

The June Refresh Jacksonville was a smash. We had about half as many people as the June Refresh but the discussion was twice as intense.

We expanded on the last month’s topic, Basic CSS, by enhancing the styles, adding CSS rollovers and showing an examples of faux columns. Here are the sample files: Basic CSS 2.

This month’s Refresh didn’t get rolling until after the presentation was over. It all started with a conversation on the pros and mostly cons of using pop-up windows. We quickly moved into talking about DOM Scripting and degradable JavaScript. Travis explained how the DOM interacts with the document and how you can use various DOM methods to access and modify your markup. Then I jumped in to highlight how you can separate your behavior, or JavaScript, from your CSS (presentation) and XHTML (markup).

Everyone was curios to know if there was an alternative to using pop-up windows, so Travis suggested using a Lightbox. We spent about 20 minutes viewing and discussing Lightbox examples before we ended the learning session of Refresh and moved into the drinking session.

Make sure you come to next month’s meeting, tentatively planned for Thursday July 27th, when we will be talking about Podcasting. Jeff Price, who produces the Tower of C podcast will be mixin’ up a podcast presentation and some mixed drinks. A message from Jeff:

To get the masses equally excited, feel free to spread the word that I’ll be bringin’ a bottle o’ rum for some mixed beverages.
