September 27th Meeting
Topic: Social Media

The Gold Rush of the 21st Century

Social media used to be a playground for people with too much time on their hands. These days it’s forcing the major search engines to adjust the way they rank sites. It’s quickly becoming imperative that anyone seeking a successful online presence dip at least a toe in the massive sea of social networks.

“I have a client that sells hurricane shutters for homes; social media isn’t worth my time or money.”

“I have a Stumble Upon and Delicious account, but I don’t get a lot of traffic for the articles I submit.”

“My company would never play with social media because of the legal and branding ramifications.”

“I’m a social media rockstar, top user and digg stories in my sleep.”

“I don’t even know what social media is!”

If you can relate to any of those situations, this session was built for you. We’ll have a lively conversation about the basics of social media (what, where and how), as well as some of the more sticky elements like corporate blogging, personal branding and specific social network nuances. You’re required to participate in this session if you attend, as social media is of course about being social!

Warning: This session will contain search engine optimization techniques and a brief, but technical discussion of WHY SOCIAL MEDIA MATTERS.

Rhea Drysdale, Internet Marketing Manager for MPS Group and Associate Editor for Search Engine Journal
